Studio 42 is a jewellery design studio based in the mountains of Queenstown, at the home of Contemporary Jeweller & artist, Jessica Winchcombe.
Jess has an international jewellery career that began from a Bachelors of Visual Art and Design, majoring in Jewellery.
After 15 years of making, exhibiting, and teaching jewellery craft, she continues to work as a full-time contemporary jeweller; seeing her designs on display as far abroad as Milan Fashion Week, Germany, Australia, Ireland, and currently showing in Flora Fauna in Queenstown and Fingers Gallery in Auckland.
In response to many Art and Jewellery Schools closing throughout New Zealand, Jess wanted to share her wealth of knowledge in the effort to keep contemporary craft-based learning alive and thriving.
From basic beginner jewellery making to advanced progression, Studio 42 provides a welcoming space for anyone with an interest in learning or just having a go.
Jess began jewellery workshops in 2015 as pop-ups at Sherwood, a sustainable hotel, restaurant and community workshop space. As popularity grew and the winter months got too cold in the community workshop, Jess decided it was time to renovate her home studio to create a more dedicated educating space to share with her students.
With the studio complete, Jess’ Airbnb experience ‘The Contemporary Jeweller’ quickly became one of Airbnb’s most frequently booked experiences, which led to formalising the Studio 42 Jewellery School for locals and travellers alike. She even received the Airbnb Host award for "Most Magical Experience" in 2021.
The Jewellery School’s courses range from taster experiences to 4-week courses, and can accommodate solo guests, couples, families, groups of friends, or private groups.
And, despite being rooted in it’s dedicated studio space, the Studio 42 Jewellery School continues to expand outward. Large groups like birthday parties, hens groups, and corporate teams can be catered for. Pop-up jewellery-making workshops are also available throughout the country and are continually added to the calendar throughout the year. Now 6 years since the first class, this little Jewellery School continues to evolve alongside its students and expand its offerings, accommodating a larger variety of courses, and will also soon be shifting a number of advanced-education courses online to a digital studio space. (If you’d like to be notified about these digital workshops, join our mailing list).
Fundamentally we are dedicated to educating the craft, but it’s also equally important to us that we teach sustainable jewellery practice. From recycled silver to New Zealand gold that has been hand-panned here in our local rivers, all materials at Studio 42 have been ethically sourced for our students to use.
With hundreds of 5-star reviews, the Studio 42 Jewellery School has asserted itself as one of the best ‘must-do’ activities to do in Queenstown. Whether you’re a weekend visitor, in a group, here for a season, or a long-time local, there is a course for everyone.
